The Museum of St Albans (MOSTA) project involved the redevelopment of the museum site in St Albans, Hertfordshire, transforming it into a high-end residential development. This project presented unique challenges due to the sensitive nature of the site, including the preservation of the existing museum façade.

Gobion Construction played a crucial role in the project by executing a comprehensive range of civil engineering works, including earthworks, demolition, drainage, and infrastructure installation.

  • Extensive earthworks, including excavation of over 4,000m³ of material for site preparation.

  • Partial demolition of existing structures while carefully preserving the listed museum façade.

  • Installation of complex façade retention systems to support the existing museum building during construction.

  • Installation of drainage systems, including attenuation tanks for permeable paving, to manage stormwater effectively.

  • Installation of street lighting for the new car park, which accommodates 30 vehicles.

  • Construction of new building foundations using reinforced concrete.

  • Installation of a variety of paving materials, including permeable paving, resin-bound paving, and decorative paving.

Project Challenges

Working within a constrained site, the project required careful planning and execution to minimise disruption to neighbouring properties, including a local school, and the busy city road.

Preserving the existing structure, the project required meticulous planning and execution to ensure the preservation of the listed museum façade during construction.

Meeting high aesthetic standards, the project required a high level of attention to detail to ensure the high-quality finishes required for this prestigious development.
