Northern Highways Depot

Location Sandy

Sector Civils

Value £2.5M

The Northern Highways Depot project involved the construction of a new facility for the Highways Agency in Sandy, Bedfordshire. This project required a comprehensive range of civil engineering works, including extensive earthworks, road construction, drainage, and infrastructure installation to support the operational needs of the depot.

Gobion Construction played a crucial role in the project by executing a wide range of civil engineering works, including earthworks, road construction, drainage, and infrastructure installation, to create a functional and efficient depot facility.

  • Extensive earthworks, including excavation of over 15,000m³ of material for site preparation.

  • Construction of the main access road to the depot, adhering to Highways Agency DMRB standards with rigorous quality control and inspections.

  • Installation of drainage systems, including storm water drainage, foul drainage, attenuation tanks, petrol interceptors, and flood balancing tanks to manage stormwater runoff effectively.

  • Construction of 6,000m² of reinforced concrete slabs for HGV access, loading, and unloading.

Construction of 7,000m² of SUDS-designed permeable car parking area. This innovative design incorporated permeable paving materials and a sub-base designed to allow rainwater to infiltrate into the ground, minimising runoff and reducing the risk of flooding to the surrounding high-level floodplain.

  • Installation of street lighting, pedestrian footpaths, and crossings to ensure safe and efficient site access.

  • Construction of substructures for office and maintenance buildings.

Project Challenges

Working within a tight timeframe, the project had a demanding schedule to meet the operational needs of the Highways Agency.

Adhering to strict quality standards, the project required meticulous attention to detail to ensure compliance with Highways Agency standards, including rigorous inspections and testing.

Managing environmental impacts, the project required careful consideration of environmental impacts and the implementation of sustainable construction practices, including the use of SUDS for car parking.

Technical Expertise

Gobion Construction demonstrated its technical expertise in executing a wide range of civil engineering works, including:

Efficient earthworks operations to handle large volumes of excavated material and prepare the site for development.

Skilled road construction techniques to build a high-quality and durable access road that meets the demands of heavy vehicle traffic.

Effective drainage design and installation to effectively manage stormwater runoff, including successfully implementing SUDS for the car parking area, and minimising environmental impact.

Precise construction of reinforced concrete slabs and other concrete structures.

Project Management, Gobion effectively managed all aspects of the project, including planning, scheduling, procurement, and site supervision, while ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and approvals.

Safety and Compliance, Gobion prioritised safety throughout the project, adhering to all relevant safety regulations and implementing stringent safety protocols.
