The London Underground - MR2 Bridge Demolition and Replacement, London project involved the demolition of the disused MR2 bridge, spanning the North and South lines of the London Underground near Baker Street Station, and the construction of a reinforced collision impact wall at street level. This critical project required meticulous planning and execution to ensure the safety of construction personnel and train passengers while minimising disruption to train services.

Gobion Construction, as a subcontractor to Loftus Group, played a crucial role in the project by executing the entire scope of works, including bridge demolition, piling, retaining wall construction, and all associated civil engineering works.

  • Controlled demolition of the existing bridge structure, including the removal of the bridge deck and centre pier.

  • Installation of 14 piles at 10m depth, requiring the design and implementation of complex temporary works to ensure safety during construction.

  • Construction of a reinforced concrete retaining wall at street level, including the installation of trackside shutters and the placement of concrete within strict time constraints.

  • Design and installation of temporary works for access, demolition, and piling operations, including a crash deck for demolition works.

  • Construction of a brick façade on the street side, installation of new paving, and the placement of decorative bollards.

Project Challenges

Working within a live rail environment, the project required meticulous planning and coordination to ensure the safety of both construction personnel and train passengers, while minimising disruption to train services.

Confined working space, the project involved working within tight constraints, particularly during piling operations, which required careful planning and execution to ensure the safety of personnel and the integrity of the existing infrastructure.

Maintaining strict deadlines, the project had a demanding schedule, requiring efficient planning and execution to meet the project deadlines and minimise disruption to train services.
