DP World 6E Yard.
Location London Gateway
Sector Civils
Value £15.6M
The DP World 6E Yard development is a significant expansion project at the port, creating a vital shuttle link access road and extending the container storage yard. This large-scale undertaking, covering approximately 40,000m², demanded comprehensive civil and electrical works to enhance the port's operational capacity and logistics.
Gobion Construction served as the Main Contractor, leading the design (where required), construction, and commissioning of all civil and electrical works for the Berth 6 – Eastern Yard development. They collaborated with CGR, the design team, to bring this complex project to fruition.
Main Contractor Project Management
Comprehensive oversight of all project phases,
from initial design collaboration to final commissioning.
-
Earthworks and Ground Improvement, extensive bulk earthworks and ground improvement techniques to prepare the vast 40,000m² site.
-
Heavy Duty Pavements, construction of robust asphalt and paved surfaces designed for port capacity and heavy container traffic.
-
Surface Water Drainage, installation of a comprehensive surface water drainage system, including piping, channels, pits, and treatment facilities, to manage large volumes of runoff.
-
General Pavements/Surfacing, installation of other essential paved and surfaced areas within the yard.
-
Kerbing, installation of all necessary kerbing for delineation and drainage management.

Contractor Designed Electrical Works
HV Supply, design and installation of the High Voltage (HV) supply connection to the local landlord’s substation.
Cabling Works, extensive cabling works across the entire site for power and data distribution.
Earthing Systems, implementation of robust earthing systems for safety and electrical stability.
High Mast Floodlighting, installation of high mast area floodlighting for comprehensive illumination of the container yard.
Control and Protection Systems, installation of advanced electrical control and protection systems for efficient operation.
LV Electrical Distribution, design and installation of Low Voltage (LV) electrical distribution networks throughout the site.
Project Challenges
Large-Scale Development, managing the complexities of a 40,000m² site, encompassing diverse civil and electrical elements.
Operational Integration, ensuring the new yard and access road seamlessly integrate with existing port operations, minimizing disruption during construction.
Heavy Duty Requirements, constructing infrastructure, particularly pavements and foundations, capable of withstanding the immense loads of container handling equipment and HGV traffic.
Comprehensive Utility Integration, managing the installation of multiple critical utility networks (electrical, communications, water, fire water, drainage) across a large site.
Complex Electrical Design & Installation, delivering contractor-designed electrical systems, including HV supply and extensive floodlighting, demanding specialised expertise.
Technical Expertise
Gobion Construction's role as Main Contractor, encompassing both civil and contractor-designed electrical works, highlights their capability to deliver complex, multi-faceted infrastructure projects. This integrated approach led to greater efficiency and coordination in the following areas:
Heavy Industrial Pavement Expertise, the extensive heavy-duty paving (both asphalt and paved) demonstrates a strong understanding and capability in constructing surfaces for demanding port environments.
Comprehensive Infrastructure Development, the wide array of utility installations, from HV/LV and comms conduits to potable and fire water mains, showcases Gobion's ability to build out complete, functional industrial sites.
Sustainable and Efficient Design (via CGR & Contractor Design), the integration of comprehensive drainage and specialized electrical systems points to a focus on long-term operational efficiency and environmental responsibility, crucial for modern port facilities.
